As we head into summer, here are a few of our favorite beaches in the continental United States. You don't have to travel too far to enjoy clean beaches with calm waters and low crowds.
Carmel-By-The-Sea, California
This storybook town in Central California is perfect for solo travelers or a romantic getaway. The town is full of fairytale cottages and quaint shops. The beach is accessible down the bluff with scenic walking trails and white-sand beaches. Dog-lovers can bring their four-legged family members along for a swim off-leash at Carmel Beach. If you stay for a longer trip, take a drive 30 minutes south and explore the beautiful Big Sur State Park. Pfeiffer Beach and its iconic Keyhole arch provide a gorgeous backdrop for photographers.
Emerald Isle, North Carolina
Emerald Isle is perfect for families and large groups. There are plenty of great vacation rentals to choose from. This beach is on a small barrier island with access to the sound for kayaking, fishing and water skiing, as well as quiet pristine beaches. With no hotels and condos, the beaches are uncrowded and peaceful, even at peak season. History buffs can take a short drive to Atlantic Beach to visit the restored Civil War Fort Macon near Atlantic Beach. Kids will enjoy the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, or the splash pad at Atlantic Beach. This beach really has something for everyone for your next family reunion!
Clearwater Beach, Florida
You really cannot beat the powdered sugar sand and crystal clear waters of Clearwater Beach. This gorgeous beach is consistently named as one of the top 5 beaches in the United States. The calm gulf waters are perfect for families with young children, unaccustomed to handling large waves. There is a delightful selection of restaurants, an aquarium, and multiple parks for kids to burn off some energy.
Sanibel Island, Florida
Sanibel Island is perfect for a family trip or romantic getaway. The gorgeous coastline, offers some of the best shelling the country has to offer. Rise early, and collect all the treasures washing in from the Gulf of Mexico, or stay up late and enjoy the upscale nightlife. During the day, enjoy the pristine beaches, or take a bicycle and explore the island. Grab a bite to eat at the diverse but delicious assortment of restaurants.
